Poplar, Purple Heart, Steel, Epoxy
Showcase of the reclaimed barn-doors from the shop. With a few build pics!
As far as the doors: Not 100% sure the wood species – but it smelled and looked like poplar. Did they make structural beams for barns in Ohio in the late 19th century out of Poplar? Let me know if you are familiar with the woods of the area around then.
The butterfly keys / bowties are hand cut out of Purple Heart.
I fire-scaled and hammered the steel to create the effect for the frame. It was mostly all tig welded although there was a tiny bit of mig welding for tacking things in place.
The rollers were made from these vintage-looking pullies I found. I inserted sealed bearings into them, then machined them round. They were held in place with epoxy. The rest of the rail are just steel with some fancy stops.
I used a marine grade varnish to finish them. Easy cleaning since these were pantry doors in a kitchen.
That’s all I’ve got to say about all that.
